We recently delivered a custom-designed nameplate for the Nokotsudo (columbarium) of Senssouji Temple, a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist temple.

This nameplate, symbolizing eternity, is crafted from titanium finished in crystalline black, with a composite structure incorporating stainless steel on the back.

The Beauty of Custom Design
Bathed in pure sunlight streaming from the ceiling, the crystalline black titanium gleams beautifully. This shine seems to bring the light of the Pure Land to the earthly realm. The combination with the stainless steel back structure not only enhances the structural strength but also highlights its beauty. The glittering columns and this custom-designed nameplate imbue the entire columbarium with a sacred atmosphere.

Details of the Nameplate
The inscription “Namu Amida Butsu” on this nameplate is reproduced from the original handwriting of Shinran Shonin. As the founder of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, Shinran Shonin has passed down deep faith and wisdom to future generations. Engraving his handwritten characters on the eternal metal titanium symbolizes the weight and perpetuity of this faith.

Light Leading to the Pure Land
In this columbarium, the nameplate shines as if inviting souls to the Pure Land. Pure sunlight pours down from the ceiling, reflecting off the titanium surface and filling the entire columbarium with sacred light. This light brings peace and tranquility to visitors, aiding in guiding the souls of the departed to the Pure Land.

“Namu Amida Butsu” by Shinran Shonin
The characters “Namu Amida Butsu” handwritten by Shinran Shonin hold the most significant meaning in Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. This phrase, symbolizing the infinite compassion and salvation of Amida Buddha, serves as a spiritual anchor for many believers. The nameplate, based on Shinran Shonin’s handwriting, amplifies the power of these words, deeply moving all who visit the columbarium.

The nameplate delivered to Senshuji Temple’s columbarium combines the beauty of titanium and stainless steel, with the inscription “Namu Amida Butsu” representing Shinran Shonin’s faith. In this sacred space, the nameplate reflects the light of the Pure Land, bringing peace and hope to visitors. Its radiant glow, inviting to the Pure Land, stands as a testament to enduring faith, passed down to the future.
